Getting to St. John: The Complete Travel Guide

Everything you need to know about getting to St. John, USVI — flights to St. Thomas, ferry options from Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie, car rentals, luggage tips, and private water taxi alternatives.

The One Thing Every First-Time Visitor Needs to Know

St. John does not have an airport. There is no way to fly directly to the island. Every visitor to St. John — whether you are staying at a luxury villa in Catherineberg or camping at Cinnamon Bay — arrives the same way: fly into St. Thomas, then take a ferry or boat across Pillsbury Sound to Cruz Bay, St. John's main town.

This sounds more complicated than it is. The entire journey from the St. Thomas airport to Cruz Bay takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on which ferry route you use and how the timing lines up. Once you understand the logistics, it is straightforward. But planning it poorly can cost you hours of waiting, so this guide covers every detail you need to make the trip smooth.

And the best part: Because St. John is a US territory, American citizens do not need a passport. A valid driver's license or state ID is all you need. There are no customs, no immigration lines, no currency exchange. You land on St. Thomas, and you are on American soil. Your cell phone works. Your health insurance works. Your dollars are dollars.

Step 1: Fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas

Cyril E. King Airport, airport code STT, is located on the western end of St. Thomas, about 15 minutes from the Red Hook ferry terminal on the eastern end of the island.

Direct flights to STT are available from many major US cities, including:

  • Miami (American Airlines, Spirit — approximately 2.5 hours)
  • Atlanta (Delta — approximately 3.5 hours)
  • New York / JFK and Newark (Delta, JetBlue, United — approximately 4 hours)
  • Charlotte (American Airlines — approximately 3.5 hours)
  • Philadelphia (American Airlines, Frontier — approximately 4 hours)
  • Fort Lauderdale (JetBlue, Spirit — approximately 3 hours)
  • Dallas / DFW (American Airlines — approximately 4.5 hours)
  • Washington, D.C. / DCA (American Airlines, seasonal — approximately 4 hours)
  • Boston (JetBlue, seasonal — approximately 4.5 hours)
Flight availability and frequency vary by season. During high season (December through April), there are significantly more nonstop options. During summer and fall, some routes shift to connecting service through Miami or San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU).

Booking tip: Flights to STT tend to be cheapest when booked 6-10 weeks in advance for high season and 4-8 weeks for shoulder season. Prices spike during Christmas week, Presidents' Day week, and spring break. If your travel dates are flexible, midweek flights (Tuesday through Thursday) are typically the least expensive.

Step 2: Get from the Airport to the Ferry

When you land at STT, you need to get to one of two ferry terminals:

Red Hook Ferry Terminal (East End, St. Thomas)

  • Distance from airport: approximately 30-40 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic
  • This is the more popular route for most visitors heading to St. John
Charlotte Amalie Ferry Terminal (Downtown, St. Thomas)
  • Distance from airport: approximately 10-15 minutes by taxi
  • Less frequent ferry service, but much closer to the airport
Taxi options from the airport:

  • Shared safari taxis (open-air trucks with bench seating): These are the standard island taxi. They operate on a per-person fare basis and are the most affordable option. Expect to pay approximately $15-20 per person to Red Hook. Safari taxis wait outside the terminal and depart when they have enough passengers. This can mean a short wait.
  • Private taxis or SUVs: Available at the airport taxi stand. More expensive ($25-40+ to Red Hook for the vehicle, not per person) but faster and direct. Worth it if you have a large group with luggage.
  • Ride-share apps: Uber and Lyft have limited availability on St. Thomas. Do not count on them as your primary option.
Luggage tip: If you have large bags, rolling suitcases, or multiple pieces per person, a private taxi or SUV is more practical than a safari taxi. Safari taxis have limited luggage space, and fitting six suitcases plus passengers can be a challenge.

Step 3: Take the Ferry to Cruz Bay, St. John

Red Hook to Cruz Bay (The Primary Route)

Duration: Approximately 20 minutes Frequency: Ferries run roughly every hour from early morning (6:00 a.m.) until late evening (11:00 p.m. or midnight, depending on the day). During peak hours, ferries may run every 30 minutes. Cost: Approximately $7-8 per person each way (cash or card; subject to change) Luggage: There is no luggage fee for hand-carried bags, but large or excess luggage may incur a small fee

The Red Hook ferry is the route most visitors use. The ride across Pillsbury Sound is short and scenic, with views of St. John's green hillsides and the smaller islands between St. Thomas and St. John. The ferries are open-air passenger boats — no vehicle transport on this route.

Timing your arrival: The biggest logistical challenge of getting to St. John is the gap between your flight landing and the ferry schedule. If your flight arrives at 2:30 p.m. and the next ferry is at 3:30 p.m., you need to clear the terminal, get your luggage, taxi to Red Hook (30-40 minutes), and make it to the dock — which is tight. Build in at least 90 minutes between your scheduled landing time and the ferry you are targeting from Red Hook. If a ferry is missed, the next one is usually just an hour later, but that hour feels long when you are standing on a dock with your suitcases.

Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay (The Alternative Route)

Duration: Approximately 45 minutes Frequency: Less frequent than Red Hook — typically 3-4 departures per day in each direction Cost: Approximately $13-14 per person each way Luggage: Same policies as Red Hook

The Charlotte Amalie ferry is a smart option if your flight arrives in the early afternoon and you do not want to taxi all the way across St. Thomas to Red Hook. The Charlotte Amalie terminal is much closer to the airport (10-15 minutes by taxi), and the ferry ride, while longer, is scenic and comfortable. The downside is frequency — if you miss a departure, you may wait 2-3 hours for the next one. Check the current schedule before committing to this route.

Private Water Taxis

For guests who want to skip the public ferry entirely, private water taxi services operate between St. Thomas and St. John. A private boat can pick you up at Red Hook or directly at the Charlotte Amalie waterfront and take you to Cruz Bay — or in some cases, directly to a dock closer to your villa.

Our top recommendation: Seahorse Water Taxi (seahorsevi.com). Seahorse provides a full-service private transfer — they meet you at the STT airport, provide a private car to the dock, and then a private water taxi directly to the National Park Dock on St. John. When you step off the boat, Valhalla St John's villa managers Scott and Anysia are there to greet you and take you straight to the villa. It is the most seamless arrival experience available.

Private water taxis typically cost $150-400+ depending on group size, boat type, and pickup location. For a group of 8-16 staying at a luxury villa like Valhalla St John, a private water taxi can be a worthwhile splurge — especially on arrival day when you have luggage, tired kids, and no interest in navigating the public ferry system.

The Valhalla St John concierge team can arrange private water taxi transfers as part of the VIP Concierge or VIP Platinum service tiers. This is one of the most popular concierge requests and one of the easiest ways to start your vacation stress-free.

Step 4: Getting Around St. John — Cars, Jeeps, and the Rental Situation

Once you arrive in Cruz Bay, you need a way to get around the island. St. John has no public bus system, no Uber, and no practical way to get from Cruz Bay to the North Shore beaches or Catherineberg without a vehicle.

Rent a car — and book early. St. John has a limited rental car fleet. During high season and holiday weeks, every available vehicle on the island can be booked out weeks in advance. The major rental companies on St. John include:

  • St. John Car Rental — located in Cruz Bay
  • Best of St. John Car Rental — located in Cruz Bay
  • L&L Jeep Rental — popular for Jeep Wranglers
  • Cool Breeze — located in Cruz Bay
  • Courtesy Car Rental — located in Cruz Bay
What to rent: A 4WD vehicle (Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, or SUV) is strongly recommended. St. John's roads are steep, narrow, and winding, with grades that can exceed 20% on some hillside routes. A standard sedan will struggle on the steeper roads, especially in wet conditions. For groups of 10-16 staying at a villa like Valhalla St John, plan on renting 2-3 vehicles to accommodate everyone.

Driving on St. John: You drive on the left side of the road — a holdover from the Danish colonial period — but the vehicles have left-hand steering wheels (American-style). The speed limit across the island is 25 mph. The main road connecting Cruz Bay to the east end is called The Centerline (Route 10). This takes a few minutes to get used to but becomes natural quickly. Drive slowly, use your horn on blind curves, and yield to traffic coming uphill.

Gas stations: There are only three gas stations on the entire island — two in Cruz Bay and one on The Centerline called The Midway. Always fill up before heading to the east end of the island, as there are no stations past The Midway.

Car barge option: If you prefer to rent a car on St. Thomas (where the selection is larger and prices may be lower), you can bring it to St. John via the car barge from Red Hook. The car barge runs several times per day and costs approximately $50-55 each way for a standard vehicle (round trip). This can be a good option if the St. John rental fleet is sold out, but factor in the barge cost and the time it takes — the barge ride is about 30 minutes, and you may wait for the next departure.

Step 5: From Cruz Bay to Valhalla St John

Cruz Bay is St. John's main town — the ferry dock, most restaurants, shops, and the National Park Visitor Center are all here. From Cruz Bay, Valhalla St John in Catherineberg is approximately a 10-minute drive east along Centerline Road (Route 10) and then up the hill via North Shore Road.

If you have arranged a rental car, you can drive directly from the Cruz Bay ferry dock to the villa. If you are arriving without a car (for example, if your rental is being delivered to the villa), the Valhalla St John villa management team can arrange a pickup from the ferry dock. This is a standard part of the arrival experience for Valhalla guests, and the concierge team will coordinate timing based on your ferry schedule.

Travel Day Planning: Putting It All Together

Here is a sample travel day timeline for a group flying from the northeastern US to Valhalla St John:

| Time | Activity | |------|----------| | 7:00 a.m. | Depart for airport (JFK, Newark, or Philadelphia) | | 9:00 a.m. | Flight departs | | 1:00 p.m. | Land at STT (Cyril E. King Airport), St. Thomas | | 1:30 p.m. | Clear terminal, collect luggage | | 1:45 p.m. | Taxi to Red Hook ferry terminal (30-40 min) | | 2:30 p.m. | Arrive Red Hook, purchase ferry tickets | | 3:00 p.m. | Ferry departs Red Hook | | 3:20 p.m. | Arrive Cruz Bay, St. John | | 3:30 p.m. | Pick up rental car or meet villa management | | 3:45 p.m. | Arrive at Valhalla St John in Catherineberg |

Total door-to-door time: approximately 8-9 hours including the flight. The actual transit on the ground (airport to villa) is about 2-2.5 hours.

Return day tip: On your departure day, reverse the process. Allow at least 2.5-3 hours between leaving the villa and your flight departure at STT. Ferry delays, taxi waits, and airport security can all add time. The Valhalla St John concierge team can help you plan departure logistics to avoid any last-minute stress.
