About St. John
Your guide to the most beautiful island in the Caribbean
Welcome to St. John, US Virgin Islands
St. John is the smallest and least developed of the three main US Virgin Islands, and that is precisely what makes it extraordinary. Nearly two-thirds of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, donated by Laurance Rockefeller in 1956. The result is an island where crystal-clear Caribbean waters meet pristine white-sand beaches backed by lush green hillsides — all preserved in a state of natural beauty that is increasingly rare in the Caribbean.
Valhalla St John sits in Catherineberg on the island's coveted North Shore, overlooking Cinnamon Bay and the British Virgin Islands. From here, the island's best beaches are minutes away, Cruz Bay town is a short drive, and the pace of life slows to exactly what a Caribbean vacation should feel like.
As a US territory, St. John requires no passport for American citizens. US dollars are the currency, English is the language, and your cell phone works just like it does on the mainland. All the beauty of the Caribbean, none of the international travel complexity.
Travel Planning
Getting to St. John
St. John does not have its own airport. All visitors arrive via the neighboring island of St. Thomas, which is served by Cyril E. King Airport (STT). Major airlines including American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, and Frontier offer direct flights to STT from cities across the United States.
Step 1: Fly to St. Thomas (STT)
Cyril E. King Airport receives direct flights from major US hubs including Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York (JFK and Newark), Philadelphia, Dallas, and Boston. Flight times range from 3 to 5 hours depending on your departure city. No passport is needed — just a valid government-issued ID, the same as any domestic US flight.
Step 2: Ferry to St. John
From St. Thomas, take a taxi or ride to the Red Hook ferry terminal on the east end of the island (approximately 30-45 minutes from the airport depending on traffic). Ferries from Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St. John, depart approximately every hour and the crossing takes about 20 minutes. There is also a ferry from Charlotte Amalie (downtown St. Thomas) to Cruz Bay, which takes about 45 minutes and runs less frequently. Private water taxis are available for a more direct experience.
Step 3: Getting to Valhalla St John
Valhalla St John is located in Catherineberg, approximately 10 minutes from the Cruz Bay ferry dock along the North Shore Road. Most guests rent a vehicle — a 4WD or Jeep is recommended for St. John's hilly terrain. Your villa management team can coordinate car rental reservations and provide detailed driving directions before your arrival. Valhalla St John offers easy, level parking for 2-4 vehicles.
Private Aviation
For guests who prefer private travel, our partner JoyRide Aviation offers on-demand charter flights to Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas from anywhere in the US and Caribbean. Based right here in St. Thomas, JoyRide handles everything from flight coordination to luxury ground transport to the Red Hook ferry terminal. Best Time to Visit St. John
St. John enjoys warm Caribbean weather year-round, with average temperatures between 77 and 87 degrees Fahrenheit. The island has two general seasons:
Peak Season: December – April
The most popular time to visit St. John. Lower humidity, minimal rainfall, and the most consistent trade winds. Holiday weeks (Christmas and New Year's) and President's Week are the highest-demand periods at Valhalla St John and across the island. Book 6-12 months in advance for peak season. Check our rates and availability for current pricing.
Off-Peak: May – November
The Caribbean's best-kept secret. Temperatures are similar to peak season with brief afternoon rain showers. Fewer crowds, better rates, and the same stunning beaches. This is sea turtle nesting season at Maho Bay. Hurricane season runs June through November, with most activity concentrated in August through October. Valhalla St John has full backup power (solar, battery wall, and generator) regardless of season. St. John Carnival takes place in late June and early July.

Before You Go
Practical Tips for Visiting St. John
No Passport Required
St. John is a US territory. American citizens need only a valid government-issued photo ID — the same as any domestic US flight. US dollars are the official currency and English is the primary language.
Rent a Vehicle
A 4WD vehicle or Jeep is strongly recommended on St. John. The island's roads are hilly, narrow, and often steep. Driving is on the left side of the road (a legacy of Danish colonial rule). Valhalla St John has level parking for 2-4 vehicles. Your concierge team can arrange car rental before arrival.
Pack Reef-Safe Sunscreen
The US Virgin Islands requires reef-safe sunscreen — products that do not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate. This protects the coral reefs that make St. John's snorkeling world-class. Bring your own or purchase on-island.
Cell Service & WiFi
US cell carriers work on St. John with no international roaming charges. Valhalla St John provides high-speed WiFi throughout the property. Coverage is strong on the North Shore and in Cruz Bay; some remote trail areas may have limited signal.
Groceries & Provisioning
St. John has limited grocery options and prices are significantly higher than the mainland US (expect 30-50% more). Many guests use provisioning services to stock the villa before arrival. Your Valhalla St John concierge team coordinates provisioning as part of VIP Concierge and VIP Platinum service tiers.
Safety & Health
St. John is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean. There is a small medical clinic in Cruz Bay; the nearest hospital is on St. Thomas. Bring any prescription medications you need. Bug spray is useful for evenings, especially during the wetter months.
