The Valhalla Experience
Where architectural heritage meets Caribbean luxury
A Villa with a Story
Architectural Heritage on the North Shore
Valhalla St John was originally designed and built in the early 1970s by noted St. John architect Glenn Spear for the CEO of Dow Chemicals. Perched in Catherineberg on the island's coveted North Shore, the villa was conceived as a private retreat that would harmonize with the dramatic hillside landscape overlooking Cinnamon Bay and the British Virgin Islands beyond.
Spear's original design embraced the natural stone and terrain of Catherineberg, creating a residence that feels carved from the hillside itself. The villa's entry features stained glass windows salvaged from a 1930s cruise ship — a detail that speaks to the craftsmanship and intentionality woven into every corner of Valhalla St John. Tiles in the Cinnamon Bay Suite were handcrafted on-site during the original construction, a testament to the artisanal approach that defined the era.

2022 – 2023 Renovation
A Comprehensive Transformation
In 2022, Valhalla St John underwent a massive, top-to-bottom renovation that honored the villa's architectural heritage while introducing modern luxury at every turn. The 2022–2023 renovation preserved Glenn Spear's original stone walls and dramatic sight lines while upgrading every system, surface, and amenity to contemporary standards.
The kitchen was reimagined as a true gourmet space, fitted with a 48-inch Viking refrigerator and freezer, a Signature Kitchen Suite 48-inch range with induction, gas, and sous-vide capability, and solid mahogany cabinetry sourced from Nicaragua. The range hood was inspired by the original dining room fireplace — a nod to the villa's past woven seamlessly into its present.
Full backup power was installed: solar panels, a Tesla battery wall, and a generator ensure that your vacation at Valhalla St John is never interrupted — even when the island grid is not cooperating. Two pools connected by a slide, a 4-person hot tub, and a covered outdoor living room with an outdoor TV complete the transformation.
Design Philosophy
Custom Balinese Teak Throughout
Every piece of furniture at Valhalla St John was custom designed and built from Balinese teak specifically for the villa. From the bed frames in each of the five king suites to the dining tables, lounge seating, and outdoor furnishings, the teak craftsmanship creates a warm, cohesive aesthetic that blends tropical elegance with the villa's stone architecture.
The design philosophy at Valhalla St John is intentional simplicity — letting the panoramic views of Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, and the British Virgin Islands serve as the primary backdrop, while the furnishings and finishes create a sense of warmth, comfort, and understated luxury. Every room opens to those views. Every space invites you to slow down.
