Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about staying at Valhalla St John, from getting to St. John to booking your villa vacation.
Getting There
Most guests fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas, which has direct flights from many major US cities including Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York, and Philadelphia. From St. Thomas, you take a taxi to Red Hook and then a short ferry ride (20 minutes) to Cruz Bay, St. John. For a more seamless arrival, we recommend Seahorse Water Taxi (seahorsevi.com) — they meet you at the airport, provide a private car to the dock, and a private water taxi directly to the National Park Dock on St. John, where our villa managers Scott and Anysia greet you personally. The entire journey from the airport to the villa typically takes about 60-90 minutes including the ferry.
No, you do not need a passport to visit St. John. The US Virgin Islands are a territory of the United States, so US citizens can travel with just a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license. This is one of the great advantages of vacationing at Valhalla St John — you get a Caribbean island experience without the hassle of international travel. Non-US citizens should check entry requirements for US territories based on their country of origin.
We strongly recommend renting a vehicle for your stay at Valhalla St John. The island's roads are steep and winding, and while taxis are available, having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Valhalla St John has easy, level parking for 2-4 vehicles. Keep in mind that driving is on the left side of the road in the USVI, though vehicles are left-hand drive (American-style), and the speed limit is 25 mph. The main road across the island is called The Centerline (Route 10). There are only three gas stations on St. John — two in Cruz Bay and one on Centerline called The Midway — so fill up before heading to the east end of the island. Our concierge team can help arrange car rentals in advance, and we recommend booking early during peak season as availability can be limited.
Valhalla St John is located in Catherineberg on the North Shore, approximately 10-15 minutes by car from the Cruz Bay ferry dock. The drive takes you along the scenic North Shore Road past several of St. John's most beautiful beaches including Caneel Bay, Hawksnest, and Trunk Bay. The villa's Catherineberg location puts you minutes from Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, and the Virgin Islands National Park trailheads while remaining above it all with panoramic views of the Caribbean and British Virgin Islands.
About Valhalla St John
Valhalla St John comfortably accommodates up to 16 guests across 5 air-conditioned bedroom suites, each with a king bed and ensuite bathroom, plus a dedicated bunk room that sleeps up to 6 children. The bunk room has its own bathroom and kitchenette, making it a self-contained space where kids can hang out independently. This makes Valhalla St John one of the largest and most family-friendly luxury villas on St. John, ideal for multigenerational family vacations, milestone celebrations, and group getaways.
Yes, all five bedroom suites and the bunk room at Valhalla St John are fully air conditioned. The living areas are designed to take advantage of the Caribbean trade winds with open-air architecture, and the covered outdoor living room, dining area, and verandas provide comfortable shaded spaces throughout the day. Many guests find that the combination of AC bedrooms for sleeping and breezy open-air living spaces during the day is the ideal Caribbean experience.
Yes, Valhalla St John has a comprehensive triple-redundancy power system that is rare among St. John villas. The villa is equipped with solar panels, a Tesla Powerwall battery system, and a full backup generator. This means your vacation will not be interrupted by power outages, which can occasionally occur on the island's WAPA grid. Air conditioning, pool pumps, water pressure from the cistern, refrigeration, and all electrical systems continue running seamlessly regardless of grid conditions.
The gourmet kitchen at Valhalla St John is outfitted for serious cooking. It features a 48-inch Viking refrigerator and freezer, a Signature Kitchen Suite 48-inch range with induction cooktop, gas burners, and sous vide capability. The cabinetry is solid mahogany sourced from Nicaragua, and the custom range hood was inspired by the original dining room fireplace from the villa's 1970s construction by architect Glenn Spear. There is also a separate outdoor kitchen with a gas grill, refrigerator, and ice maker, plus a kitchenette in the bunk room and a bar area with beverage center and ice maker.
Valhalla St John is fully stocked for a luxury stay. Beach gear: beach towels, pool towels, boogie boards, beach chairs, a cooler for beach trips, a beach tent (we don't use umbrellas — they tend to get caught by the wind), and pool floats and toys. Kitchen: a 48-inch Viking refrigerator and freezer, Signature Kitchen Suite 48-inch range, a high-end espresso machine, drip coffee maker, blender, basic spices and cooking oil, plus all standard cookware, serveware, and bar tools. Bath and laundry: hair dryers in every bathroom, full bath linens, dish soap, paper towels, trash bags, and laundry detergent. Connectivity and entertainment: high-speed WiFi via Starlink with broadband failover, smart TVs in the main living areas and bedrooms, and an outdoor TV. Available as add-on rentals through the villa team: snorkel gear (well-maintained masks, fins, and snorkels) is rented at $40 per set per week through Lovely Day rather than included, because the gear requires careful cleaning and inspection between stays. Kids gear including a pack-n-play, high chair, and soft beach toys is available as a separate rental, with a bamboo-sheeted travel crib coming soon.
Absolutely. Valhalla St John welcomes children of all ages and is one of the most family-friendly luxury villas on St. John. The dedicated bunk room sleeps up to 6 children with its own bathroom, kitchenette, and lounge area — a space kids can call their own. The media and gaming room provides entertainment for all ages, and the dual pools connected by a water slide are always a highlight. Please note that the villa is set on a hillside with two unfenced pools and a pool slide, so children must be supervised at all times around the water and outdoor areas. We ask all guests to sign a standard liability waiver upon check-in. Our on-site villa managers Scott and Anysia are experienced with families of all sizes and can help arrange kid-friendly activities, beach gear, and provisions.
Yes, Valhalla St John has high-speed WiFi throughout the property via Starlink, with failover to broadband through Viya for redundancy. The connection supports streaming, video calls, remote work, and multiple devices simultaneously. That said, we encourage guests to take advantage of the opportunity to unplug — as one of our guests noted, 'To see a house full of kids put their phones down and just appreciate the view for long stretches of time says a lot.' The views of Cinnamon Bay and the British Virgin Islands from the upper veranda tend to be more captivating than any screen.
Booking & Logistics
Rates at Valhalla St John vary by season. Holiday weeks (mid-December through early January) command the highest rates, followed by high season (January through April), shoulder season (May-June and November-December), and summer (July-October). Visit our Rates & Availability page for current pricing and real-time calendar availability. All rates are subject to a 12.5% USVI Hotel Room Tax and a cleaning fee. We encourage booking direct with Valhalla St John to avoid the 5-15% platform fees charged by VRBO and Airbnb.
The cleaning fee at Valhalla St John is $1,250 per stay. This covers a thorough professional cleaning of the entire villa including all five bedroom suites, the bunk room, eight bathrooms, kitchen, living areas, outdoor spaces, and pool areas. The villa is cleaned and prepared to luxury hospitality standards before each guest arrival by our on-site villa management team.
A 12.5% USVI Hotel Room Occupancy Tax applies to all vacation rental stays on St. John, including stays at Valhalla St John. This is a territorial tax collected by the US Virgin Islands government and is standard across all lodging on the island. The tax applies to the nightly rate and is calculated on your total rental amount. There are no additional local or municipal taxes beyond this 12.5% rate.
When you book Valhalla St John directly through our website, you avoid the service fees that platforms like VRBO (4-9%) and Airbnb (12-20%+) charge on top of the rental rate. On a typical week-long stay, this can save you $1,000-$3,000 or more. Beyond the savings, booking direct gives you a personal relationship with our villa management team from day one, more flexibility on dates and special requests, and direct communication without a platform intermediary. Many guests put their platform fee savings toward a private chef dinner, a boat charter, or a VIP Concierge upgrade.
For holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year's) and peak high season (February-March), we recommend booking 6-12 months in advance as these periods fill quickly. Spring break weeks are also popular and should be booked several months ahead. Shoulder season and summer dates offer more flexibility, but if you have specific dates in mind, earlier is always better. Check real-time availability on our Rates & Availability page.
Valhalla St John uses a 50/50 payment structure: 50% is due at the time of booking, with the remaining 50% due 60 days before your arrival date. All paid prepayments are non-refundable. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. If you need to reschedule rather than cancel, please contact us as early as possible and we will do our best to accommodate alternative dates.
No, Valhalla St John does not require a security deposit. However, guests are responsible for any damage to the property or its furnishings during their stay. Our on-site villa managers Scott and Anysia are available throughout your stay to help with any questions about the property, amenities, or equipment — if something breaks or needs attention, just let them know.

Valhalla St John's Catherineberg location on the North Shore puts you within minutes of some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. Cinnamon Bay is the closest at roughly 3 minutes by car — it offers calm water ideal for swimming and kayaking, plus watersports rentals and the historic Cinnamon Bay ruins. Maho Bay, known for its sea turtle sightings, is about 5 minutes away. Trunk Bay, the most popular beach on St. John and regularly named one of the world's best beaches with its famous underwater snorkel trail, is approximately 5 minutes in the other direction. Hawksnest Bay, a local favorite, is also just a short drive. Beach tip: bring UPF sun-protective clothing, a hat, a water bottle, and a waterproof bag. No glass is allowed on any beach, reef-safe sunscreen is required by USVI law, and you should carry out all trash. For beach-day food, Sam and Jacks or North Shore Deli make excellent sandwiches and smoothies to take with you. Read our About St. John page for a comprehensive guide to the island's beaches.
Honestly, every season has its appeal. Winter (December–April) is peak season — perfect weather, cooler temperatures, and the trade winds keep things comfortable, but the island is at its busiest and rates are highest. Summer (May–August) is a hidden gem — the water is crystal clear and calm, ideal for snorkeling and diving, and you'll have beaches nearly to yourself, though it is hotter. Spring and fall shoulder seasons offer a nice balance of good weather and lower rates. Valhalla St John is closed during September and October for hurricane season. No matter when you visit, the beaches, views, and experience at Valhalla St John are spectacular — it really comes down to whether you prefer fewer crowds or cooler temperatures.
