What to Pack for a Week on St. John

A practical, St. John-specific packing list for your USVI villa vacation — including reef-safe sunscreen requirements, what Valhalla St John provides, and what to leave at home.

Pack Light, Pack Smart, Pack for the Island

Packing for St. John is not like packing for most Caribbean destinations. The island is casual — no one is dressing up for dinner, the roads are rugged, and the beaches range from fully equipped to completely wild. What you actually need is less about resort wear and more about practical gear that works on a small, hilly, National Park island where you will spend most of your time outdoors.

This is a St. John-specific packing list based on what we see guests at Valhalla St John use (and wish they had brought) during a typical week-long stay. We have also noted what the villa provides so you can skip items that are already waiting for you at the house.

The Essentials

Reef-Safe Sunscreen (This Is Not Optional)

The US Virgin Islands has banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect the coral reefs. This is law, not a suggestion. Standard sunscreens from brands like Banana Boat and Coppertone often contain these chemicals. You need reef-safe sunscreen — look for mineral-based formulas using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Bring it from home. Reef-safe sunscreen is available on St. John, but the selection is limited and the prices are steep — expect to pay $18-25 for a bottle that costs $12 on the mainland. For a group of 10-16, you will go through multiple bottles in a week. Buy in bulk before your trip. Brands like Sun Bum, Raw Elements, and Thinksport make effective reef-safe options.

Tip: Reef-safe sunscreen can leave a slight white cast on skin. Many guests prefer reef-safe sunscreen sticks for the face and spray or lotion for the body. Apply generously and reapply after swimming — the Caribbean sun is stronger than you expect, even on cloudy days.

Footwear That Can Handle the Roads

St. John is not flat. The roads are steep, often unpaved near trailheads, and the terrain between a parking area and a beach can include rocks, roots, and uneven ground. Pack footwear that reflects this:

  • Sturdy sandals or hiking sandals (Chacos, Tevas, Keens) — These are the most versatile shoe on St. John. They handle rocky beach entries, short hikes, and casual dinners in town. Most guests live in these all week.
  • Water shoes — Essential for rocky beach entries at spots like Hawksnest Bay and the rocky ends of Cinnamon Bay. A simple pair of neoprene water shoes protects your feet from sea urchins, coral rubble, and sharp rocks. They pack flat and weigh almost nothing.
  • One pair of casual shoes or nicer sandals — For dinners in Cruz Bay. Nothing formal — St. John restaurants are universally casual. Clean sandals or boat shoes are fine everywhere on the island.
Leave at home: High heels, dress shoes, and anything you cannot walk on gravel in. You will not need them.

Bug Spray for the Evenings

St. John has mosquitoes and no-see-ums (sand flies), particularly in the evenings and in areas near standing water or vegetation. During the day at the beach, insects are rarely an issue. But as the sun goes down — especially on the villa terrace during dinner — you will want bug spray.

What works: DEET-based repellents are the most effective. For a DEET-free option, products with picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus work reasonably well. Bring enough for your entire group for the week — bug spray is expensive on-island.

Tip: Valhalla St John's outdoor living areas are positioned to catch the evening trade winds, which helps significantly with insects. But on calm evenings, bug spray is your best friend.

Light Layers for Evening Breezes

St. John is warm year-round — daytime temperatures typically range from 80 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit — but the trade winds pick up in the evenings, and the hillside elevation at Valhalla St John in Catherineberg means temperatures can drop into the mid-70s after sunset. A light long-sleeve shirt, a linen button-down, or a thin sweater is all you need, but you will be glad you have it during a breezy dinner on the terrace.

A Light Rain Jacket or Packable Windbreaker

St. John gets brief afternoon rain showers, especially during the shoulder and summer seasons (May through November). These showers typically last 15-30 minutes and are followed by sunshine. A packable rain jacket that fits in a beach bag or daypack means you do not have to abandon a beach day because of a passing shower.

A Waterproof Bag

A waterproof bag is essential on St. John — not just for boat days but for everyday beach trips. A 10-20 liter roll-top dry bag keeps your phone, wallet, keys, and camera safe on boats, kayaks, and during beach-hopping. These pack completely flat and cost $15-25 on Amazon. If you plan to do any boat day excursions — and you should, because the boat charters from St. John to the British Virgin Islands and surrounding cays are spectacular — you will be glad you brought one.

Snorkel Gear: Bring It or Use Ours

Valhalla St John provides complimentary snorkel gear for guests — masks, snorkels, and fins in a range of sizes. For most guests, this is sufficient and saves valuable suitcase space.

When to bring your own: If you have a prescription snorkel mask, if you are particular about fin fit, or if you plan to snorkel extensively (every day, multiple spots), your own gear will be more comfortable and better fitting than shared equipment. If you are a casual snorkeler — a few beach outings during the week — the villa gear works well.

Kids' gear note: If you are traveling with children, check with the Valhalla St John concierge team about available children's sizes before packing. Kids' snorkel gear is small and light, so bringing their own masks is easy if needed.

What Valhalla St John Provides

One of the advantages of staying at a fully equipped luxury villa rather than a hotel is that many of the bulky, heavy items you would otherwise need to pack are already at the house. At Valhalla St John, guests have access to:

  • Beach towels — No need to pack your own. Beach towels are provided and refreshed during your stay.
  • Snorkel gear — Masks, snorkels, and fins in multiple sizes for adults and older children.
  • Pool towels — Fresh towels at the pool deck daily.
  • Beach chairs and a cooler — Available for guests to take to the beach each day.
  • Kitchen essentials — The gourmet kitchen at Valhalla St John is fully stocked with cookware, utensils, plates, glasses, and serving dishes. You do not need to bring any kitchen items.
  • Linens and toiletries — High-quality bed linens, bath towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in all suites and the bunk room.
  • Laundry facilities — A washer and dryer are available, which means you can pack lighter and wash mid-week.
This means you can leave at home: Beach towels, pool towels, bulky snorkel gear (if you prefer), coolers, kitchen supplies, and excessive quantities of clothing. With laundry available, a week on St. John requires less clothing than you think.

The Clothing List (Keep It Simple)

St. John is one of the most casual places in the Caribbean. There is no dress code anywhere on the island. Here is what actually works for a week:

  • Swimsuits: 2-3 per person (you will wear one almost every day, and having a dry one ready matters)
  • Coverups or casual shorts and T-shirts: For driving to the beach, stopping in town, and casual days at the villa
  • Casual evening wear: Light sundresses, linen pants, or clean shorts with a collared shirt. This is as "dressed up" as St. John gets.
  • Workout clothes: If you plan to hike the Reef Bay Trail, the Cinnamon Bay Nature Trail, or any of the Virgin Islands National Park trails, moisture-wicking athletic wear is more comfortable than cotton in the humidity.
  • UPF sun-protective clothing: Rash guards, UPF long-sleeve shirts, and UPF hats provide significantly better sun protection than sunscreen alone, especially during long beach days and boat trips. This is one of the most underrated packing items for St. John — the Caribbean sun is stronger than most visitors expect, and UPF clothing means less sunscreen application and less risk of burns.
  • A hat and quality sunglasses: The sun is intense. A wide-brim hat and polarized sunglasses are not accessories — they are necessities.

What Not to Pack

  • Formal clothing of any kind. You will not use it.
  • A hair dryer. Valhalla St John has them in the suites. And honestly, your hair is going to be in the ocean most of the day.
  • More than one pair of "nice" shoes. One pair of clean sandals handles every dinner on the island.
  • Excessive toiletries. The villa provides basics, and Cruz Bay has a few shops if you forget something.
  • Non-reef-safe sunscreen. It is illegal in the USVI — reef-safe sunscreen is required by law — and harmful to the reefs you will be snorkeling over.
  • Glass containers for the beach. No glass is allowed on any beach on St. John. Bring plastic or metal water bottles and transfer drinks to cans or non-glass containers before heading out.

Provisioning: What You Do Not Want to Pack, We Can Get for You

For items that are impractical to fly with — cases of bottled water, beer, wine, groceries for the week, specialty food items — the Valhalla St John concierge team offers provisioning services that stock the villa kitchen before you arrive. You send your list, and the kitchen is ready when you walk in the door.

Provisioning is available through the VIP Concierge and VIP Platinum tiers and is one of the most requested services among our guests. It eliminates the need to spend your first afternoon on St. John navigating the grocery stores — and it means everything from coffee and cream to snorkel-day snacks is waiting at the villa.
