Where to Eat on St. John: A Restaurant Guide from Our Villa Team

A curated restaurant guide for St. John, USVI, written by Valhalla St John's villa management team — covering fine dining, casual beachside spots, takeout, provisions, and private chef options.

Local Knowledge from the People Who Live Here

One of the most common questions we get from guests at Valhalla St John is simple: "Where should we eat?" It is a fair question. St. John is a small island — roughly 20 square miles — but the dining scene punches well above its weight. You will find everything from upscale Caribbean-fusion restaurants with wine lists to barefoot beach bars serving the best cheeseburger you have ever had.

We are Scott and Anysia Hutchens, the villa management team at Valhalla St John in Catherineberg. We live on St. John full-time, eat at these restaurants regularly, and have been steering guests toward the right meals for years. This guide is our honest, opinionated take on where to eat on St. John — organized by type, with specific recommendations on what to order, when to go, and what to expect.

A few things to know before we get into the list:

  • Dining on St. John is not cheap. Expect $40-65+ per entree at the better restaurants, and $15-25 for a main at casual spots. A dinner out for a group of 10-12 adults with drinks and tip can easily run $1,000-1,500. This is the Caribbean, and nearly everything is shipped or barged in.
  • Reservations matter. During high season (January through April) and holiday weeks, the best restaurants book up days in advance. Do not assume you can walk in on a Saturday night. If you are booking the VIP Concierge tier at Valhalla St John, restaurant reservations are one of the things we handle for you — and we know who to call.
  • Most restaurants are in Cruz Bay. Cruz Bay is St. John's only real town, and the majority of restaurants are concentrated in a few walkable blocks. Coral Bay, on the east end of the island, has a handful of options as well. There are no restaurants in Catherineberg or on the North Shore — which is one reason having a fully equipped gourmet kitchen at the villa matters.

Fine Dining and Upscale Options

The Terrace

Location: Cruz Bay (at the Marketplace) Cuisine: Contemporary Caribbean, seafood-forward Price range: $45-70 per entree Vibe: Elevated but relaxed; open-air terrace seating with ambient lighting Reservations: Strongly recommended, especially Friday and Saturday

The Terrace is our top recommendation for a special-occasion dinner on St. John. The menu changes seasonally and leans into fresh, locally sourced seafood with Caribbean and Mediterranean influences. The presentation is polished without being fussy, and the wine list is one of the best on the island.

What to order: The fresh catch of the day, prepared however the chef recommends — it is consistently excellent. The lobster risotto is a standout when it appears on the menu. For appetizers, the tuna tartare sets the tone for the meal.

Tip: Ask for a table on the outer edge of the terrace for the best atmosphere. If you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, let us know when we make the reservation — they handle special occasions well.

Longboard

Location: Cruz Bay (waterfront, near the Lumberyard) Cuisine: Coastal-inspired, farm-to-table with Caribbean flair Price range: $35-55 per entree Vibe: Stylish and modern; feels like a high-end surf lodge Reservations: Recommended, especially for parties of 6+

Longboard has become one of the most talked-about restaurants on St. John in recent years, and for good reason. The food is creative without being overwrought, the cocktail program is strong, and the atmosphere strikes a balance between upscale and island-casual that feels exactly right for a vacation dinner.

What to order: The blackened mahi with mango salsa is a reliable favorite. The short rib is excellent for non-seafood eaters. Start with the coconut shrimp or the poke bowl appetizer. The craft cocktail menu is worth exploring — the bartenders know what they are doing.

Tip: Longboard does not take reservations for parties under a certain size (policies vary by season), so arrive early — by 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. — to avoid a long wait. Larger groups should reserve in advance.

Morgan's Mango

Location: Cruz Bay (across from the National Park Visitor Center) Cuisine: Caribbean fusion, bold flavors Price range: $35-55 per entree Vibe: Lively, colorful, open-air; a St. John institution Reservations: Recommended during high season

Morgan's Mango has been a Cruz Bay staple for decades, and it remains one of the most popular dinner spots on the island. The cooking is Caribbean at its core — bold spices, tropical fruits, grilled meats and seafood — served in a lively outdoor setting with colorful decor and the energy of a place that has been doing it right for a long time.

What to order: The voodoo snapper is the signature dish — a fresh snapper fillet with a spicy Caribbean sauce that has been on the menu for years because people keep ordering it. The jerk chicken is another reliable choice. Desserts lean tropical — the key lime pie is solid.

Tip: Morgan's Mango can get noisy on busy nights, which is part of the charm but not ideal if you are looking for a quiet, intimate dinner. For that, head to The Terrace. For a fun, vibrant night out, Morgan's Mango delivers.

Casual and Beachside Dining

The Beach Bar

Location: Cruz Bay (waterfront, next to the ferry dock) Cuisine: Bar food elevated — burgers, tacos, salads, seafood baskets Price range: $15-25 per main Vibe: Quintessential Caribbean beach bar; sand floor, ocean views, live music Reservations: Not accepted — walk-in only

The Beach Bar is where your first meal on St. John should happen. It is right next to the Cruz Bay ferry dock, which means you can literally step off the ferry, walk 30 seconds, and be sitting in the sand with a cold drink and your feet in the ocean breeze. It is not fine dining, and it is not trying to be. It is a beach bar that serves surprisingly good food in the most relaxed setting on the island.

What to order: The fish tacos are consistently excellent — fresh, generous, and exactly what you want after a day of travel. The cheeseburger is a crowd favorite. The drink menu leans toward frozen cocktails and cold beer, which is exactly right for the setting.

Tip: The Beach Bar has live music most evenings during high season. Check the schedule — catching a local band at sunset with a drink in hand is one of the best free experiences on St. John.

Skinny Legs

Location: Coral Bay (east end of St. John) Cuisine: Burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches — classic American bar food Price range: $10-18 per main Vibe: Dive bar charm with a loyal local following; open-air, unpretentious Reservations: Not needed

Skinny Legs is a Coral Bay institution. It is a bar and grill in the truest sense — cold beer, excellent burgers, and a crowd that mixes local residents, barefoot sailors, and tourists who have heard about the place and made the drive across the island. The setting is casual to the point of being ramshackle, and that is entirely the point.

What to order: The Skinny Legs burger. That is what you came for. It is a straightforward, well-made cheeseburger on a good bun, and it has developed a legitimate reputation as one of the best burgers in the Virgin Islands. The hot dogs are also good, and the fries are reliable.

Tip: Skinny Legs is worth the 30-minute drive from Catherineberg to Coral Bay, especially if you combine it with a visit to Salt Pond Bay or Lameshur Bay on the island's south side. It is a different pace of life over in Coral Bay — slower, quieter, more "old St. John." Skinny Legs is the heart of that community.

High Tide Bar and Seafood Grill

Location: Cruz Bay Cuisine: Seafood, Caribbean bar food, cocktails Price range: $18-35 per main Vibe: Casual waterfront; good for families and groups Reservations: Not required but helpful for larger groups during peak hours

High Tide occupies a sweet spot between the barefoot casualness of The Beach Bar and the polish of the fine dining spots. The seafood is fresh and well-prepared, the portions are generous, and the waterfront location makes it a comfortable choice for families or groups that want a sit-down meal without the formality (or price tag) of the upscale restaurants.

What to order: The coconut shrimp platter and the grilled mahi sandwich are both reliably good. The conch fritters are a classic Caribbean appetizer worth trying if you have not had them before. The frozen drinks are strong — order accordingly.

Beach Food and Takeout

Sam and Jacks

Location: Cruz Bay area What to expect: Excellent sandwiches and smoothies — perfect for grabbing on your way to the beach. A favorite among locals and repeat visitors for quick, fresh, no-fuss beach-day food.

North Shore Deli

Location: North Shore What to expect: Another reliable option for beach-day sandwiches, wraps, and smoothies. Convenient if you are heading to Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, or Maho Bay and want to pick up lunch on the way.

Tip: Pack your beach food in a cooler from the villa with plenty of water and ice. Remember — no glass is allowed on any beach on St. John, so transfer drinks to cans or plastic bottles before you go.

Nightlife and Live Music

St. John has a surprisingly active live music scene, with performances almost every night during high season.

Cruz Bay:

  • The Beach Bar — Live music most evenings; the quintessential sunset-and-music spot on St. John.
  • The Landing — Regular live music and a lively bar scene in the heart of Cruz Bay.
  • Lovango Rum Bar — A scenic waterfront spot with live music and craft cocktails.
Coral Bay:
  • Salty Mongoose — The place to be on Saturday nights in Coral Bay, with live music and a fun local crowd.
  • Johnny Lime — Open mic night every Tuesday, drawing local musicians and a laid-back audience.

Provisions and Cooking at the Villa

For groups of 10-16 staying at a luxury villa like Valhalla St John, cooking at the villa is not just a way to save money — it is one of the pleasures of the trip. Valhalla's gourmet kitchen features Viking and Signature Kitchen Suite appliances, a large island with seating, and an outdoor kitchen with a grill and dining for 10. Preparing meals together — especially breakfasts, lunches, and casual dinners — is part of the villa experience.

Starfish Market

Location: Cruz Bay (The Marketplace complex) What to expect: The closest thing to a full grocery store on St. John. Starfish Market carries produce, meats, a full deli counter, dairy, frozen goods, snacks, beverages, and a decent wine and beer selection. The deli counter makes sandwiches and prepared foods for takeout. This is the go-to for meats, deli items, and produce.

What to know: Grocery prices on St. John are significantly higher than on the mainland — expect to pay 50-100% more for many items. Everything is barged or shipped in. Shop with that expectation and you will not have sticker shock. For staples and basics, Starfish Market has what you need. For specialty or gourmet items, consider using a provisioning service (see below).

Dolphin Market

Location: Cruz Bay What to expect: A solid general grocery store in Cruz Bay with everyday essentials, snacks, beverages, and household items. A good complement to Starfish Market if you need to hit multiple stores to find everything on your list.

STJ Market

Location: Cruz Bay What to expect: Another grocery option in the Cruz Bay area carrying a mix of staples, produce, and island goods.

St. John Market (Pine Peace)

Location: Pine Peace area, between Cruz Bay and Coral Bay What to expect: A smaller market with a good selection of local produce, Caribbean specialty items, and everyday groceries. Less selection than Starfish but often less crowded.

Tip: St. John Market sometimes carries local fruits and vegetables that are fresher and less expensive than what you will find at Starfish. Worth a stop, especially if you are driving between Cruz Bay and the east end.

Love City Market

Locations: Cruz Bay and Coral Bay What to expect: Love City has two locations — one in Cruz Bay and one in Coral Bay. The Coral Bay location is particularly useful if you are spending a day on the east end of the island and need provisions. Carries groceries, snacks, drinks, and basic supplies.

Provisioning Services

If you do not want to spend your first day on St. John navigating the grocery stores, provisioning services will stock your villa's kitchen before you arrive. You submit your grocery list in advance, and a local team shops, delivers, and unpacks everything so your refrigerator and pantry are full when you walk in the door.

This is one of the most popular services that guests at Valhalla St John request through the VIP Concierge and VIP Platinum tiers. The concierge team handles the coordination — you send your list, and the kitchen is ready when you arrive. For a group of 12-16, having breakfast ingredients, snacks, drinks, and dinner staples waiting at the villa saves an enormous amount of time on day one.

Private Chef Experiences

The option that splits the difference between cooking every meal and spending $1,500 per group dinner out is hiring a private chef for one or two evenings during your stay. A private chef comes to the villa, prepares a multi-course meal in the kitchen, serves it on the outdoor terrace or in the dining room, and handles all cleanup. You get a restaurant-quality meal in the comfort and privacy of your villa, with a menu customized to your group's preferences and dietary needs.

What to expect:

  • Menu: Typically a 3-5 course meal with Caribbean and seafood influences. The chef will consult with you on preferences, allergies, and dietary restrictions in advance.
  • Cost: Private chef dinners on St. John typically range from $125-200+ per person, depending on the menu, wine pairings, and group size. For a group of 12-16, this works out to be comparable to (or less than) a night out at one of the fine dining restaurants — and you do not have to drive.
  • Experience: The private chef dinner is often the most memorable meal of the trip. Kids can eat early and head to the bunk room or pool while adults enjoy a leisurely multi-course dinner on the terrace overlooking Cinnamon Bay. It is a fundamentally different experience than a restaurant — more intimate, more flexible, more personal.
The Valhalla St John concierge team has relationships with several excellent private chefs on St. John and can coordinate every detail — menu planning, dietary accommodations, wine pairings, and timing. Private chef coordination is available through both the VIP Concierge and VIP Platinum service tiers.

Our Recommended Dining Plan for a Week at Valhalla St John

Based on years of hosting guests, here is the dining approach we see work best for groups of 10-16 staying for a week:

  • Breakfast every day at the villa. Stock the kitchen with eggs, fruit, pastries, coffee, and juice. The gourmet kitchen at Valhalla St John makes morning cooking easy, and nobody wants to load 12 people into cars for a restaurant breakfast.
  • Lunch most days at the villa or as a packed beach picnic. Sandwiches, salads, snacks, and drinks from the cooler. Some days, grab lunch in Cruz Bay after a morning at the beach.
  • 2-3 dinners out. The Terrace for a special occasion, Longboard or Morgan's Mango for a fun group night, and The Beach Bar or High Tide for something casual.
  • 1 private chef dinner. Make it the highlight of the week. Do it mid-trip when everyone is settled and relaxed.
  • 3-4 dinners at the villa. Grill night, taco night, pasta night — the outdoor kitchen and grill at Valhalla St John make group cooking a genuine pleasure, not a chore.
This approach keeps food costs reasonable (dining out for every meal for 12-16 people adds up extremely fast), lets you experience the best of St. John's restaurant scene, and still gives you the private chef experience and the communal villa cooking that guests consistently describe as one of the highlights of their trip.
