Valhalla St John

A St. John Villa for Grandparents, Parents and Grandkids

At a glance: Valhalla St John is a private luxury villa in Catherineberg, on the North Shore of St. John in the US Virgin Islands. It sleeps up to 16: five air-conditioned king suites, each with its own bathroom, plus a bunk room for up to six kids. It works best for 8–10 adults plus 6–8 kids. Families come here for reunions, big birthdays and anniversaries, with three generations under one roof.

Room for every generation

Most of our groups are three generations: grandparents, their grown children, and the grandkids. Valhalla's layout gives each of them a space of their own.

  • Main level: three king suites. These are the Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay and Maho Bay suites, on the same floor as the kitchen, living room and dining area. Two bedrooms on this level need no stairs from the driveway, which suits grandparents.
  • Lower level: two more king suites. The Hawksnest Suite sits near the lower pool and hot tub. The Francis Bay Suite is the largest bedroom, with a covered outdoor space and a workout area. Parents of young kids often like being down here, close to the pools.
  • The Jumbie Bunk Room, also on the lower level. It has one queen-over-queen bunk and two extra-long twin beds, for up to six kids, plus its own bathroom, a kitchenette and a lounge area. The kids get their own space and the adults get some quiet.
  • Eight bathrooms in all (six full, two half), so mornings don't turn into a queue.

Easy for grandparents

The driveway comes in at the main part of the house, and there are no stairs from the car. Two bedrooms on this level need no stairs at all, so they're a natural fit for grandparents, close to the kitchen, living room and dining area. Parking is level, with room for 2 to 4 vehicles. Scott and Anysia live on the property and are happy to help you pick rooms before you arrive.

For the kids

  • Two pools connected by a water slide.
  • A media and gaming room.
  • The bunk room, their own space, with its own kitchenette.
  • Pool floats and toys, boogie boards and beach chairs.
  • A pack-n-play, high chair and soft beach toys are available as a rental, and a travel crib is coming soon.

The villa sits on a hillside with two unfenced pools and a slide, so children must be supervised at all times around the water. All guests sign a standard liability waiver at check-in.

Beaches are close. Cinnamon Bay is about 3 minutes away by car, and Maho Bay, with calm, shallow water and sea turtles, is about 5. Trunk Bay's snorkel trail is about 5 minutes away. It has no lifeguards on duty, and its $5 fee for ages 16 and up is paid by card or phone only.

Celebrations: birthdays, anniversaries and reunions

Big birthdays, milestone anniversaries and family reunions are some of the most common reasons groups choose Valhalla. Here's what we can set up:

  • Private chef dinners on the pool deck, for up to 10 at the table plus a kids' table. Our chef partners include Chef Vincent Alterio, Chef Shaibu of Oasis Private Chefs and Chef Erin of Coral Bay Catering.
  • Live music. Our on-site managers Scott and Anysia perform as Chasing Hues. Valhalla guests can book a private two-hour show on the pool deck with a set list made for your group: $600 (regularly $750). In-villa performances for sunset dinners and anniversaries are 20% off the standard rate for Valhalla guests.
  • Photography with Island Media Co.: family sessions, milestone trips or aerial shots of the villa.
  • In-villa massage with Mango Bliss Spa: 60- or 90-minute sessions, single or couples.
  • Boat charters, including days to the British Virgin Islands. Everyone on board needs a passport, children included.
  • Basic celebration help comes with VIP Concierge ($1,000): bakery recommendations, simple decorations when arranged ahead, and restaurant reservations.
  • VIP Platinum ($2,500) is full trip management. It covers celebration planning for birthdays, anniversaries and reunions, chef coordination, boat charters and the full itinerary, so the person hosting gets to enjoy the trip too.

Why Valhalla works for 8–10 adults plus kids

  • Five king suites, so no couple gets stuck with the small room, plus a separate bunk room for up to six kids.
  • Best fit: 8–10 adults plus 6–8 kids. The house sleeps 16.
  • Meals together: the dining table seats up to 10, so the adults sit together while the kids have their own table or casual seating. Room to spread out: a covered outdoor kitchen and an outdoor living room with a TV, as well as the indoor kitchen and living areas.
  • A kitchen built for big meals, with a 48-inch Viking refrigerator and a 48-inch gas Wolf range and oven.
  • Backup power: solar, a Tesla Powerwall and a full generator, so an island outage doesn't spoil the trip.
  • On-site help: Scott and Anysia live on the property. Every booking includes Villa Manager Support.
