At a glance: Valhalla St John is a private villa in Catherineberg, on the North Shore of St. John, US Virgin Islands, above Cinnamon Bay and bordering Virgin Islands National Park. It sleeps up to 16 in five air-conditioned king suites and a kids' bunk room, and works best for 8–10 adults plus 6–8 kids. Cinnamon, Maho and Trunk Bay are 3 to 5 minutes away by car, US citizens need no passport, and the on-site managers, Scott and Anysia, live on the property.

One villa, three generations, everyone with their own space

The hardest part of spring break with a big family is giving everyone a room of their own. Valhalla was renovated top to bottom in 2022–23 with that in mind.

  • Five king suites, each with an ensuite bathroom and air conditioning. Three are on the main level (Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay and Maho Bay) and two are on the lower level near the pools (Hawksnest and Francis Bay, the largest suite). You can drive right up to the main level with no stairs, and two of the bedrooms there need no stairs either, which makes them a good fit for grandparents.
  • The Jumbie Bunk Room, for up to six kids. One queen-over-queen bunk sleeps up to four, plus two extra-long twin beds. It has its own bathroom, lounge area, breakfast table and a kitchenette with sink, refrigerator and dishwasher. Kids get their own space, and parents get their evenings back.
  • A media room with a large screen and its own full bathroom, plus a bar, breakfast and game room.
  • Room to gather: a covered outdoor living and dining area with a table for 10, a gas grill and an outdoor TV, and the Upper Veranda for morning coffee over Cinnamon Bay. With a bigger group, the kids get their own table or casual seating.

Valhalla sleeps 16 when the bunk room is full. For a week together, it works best for 8–10 adults plus 6–8 kids. If you're planning a trip across generations, see our multigenerational planning guide.

The pools, the slide, and what kids do all day

Valhalla has two pools connected by a slide, and it's the feature kids talk about most. There's also a garden hot tub for four adults.

Also on hand for kids:

  • Pool floats and toys, boogie boards, beach towels, beach chairs, a beach tent and a cooler for beach days.
  • Snorkel sets can be rented through the villa team for $40 per set per week.
  • A pack-n-play, high chair and soft beach toys are available as a separate rental.
  • Fast Starlink WiFi with broadband failover.
  • Full backup power (solar, a Tesla Powerwall and a generator), so AC, pool pumps, refrigeration and WiFi keep running if the island grid goes down.

Safety, said plainly: the villa sits on a hillside and both pools are unfenced, so children must be supervised at all times around the water and outdoor areas. Guests sign a standard liability waiver at check-in. Scott and Anysia have hosted families of every size and are happy to talk through your group's ages before you arrive.

Beaches, snorkeling and boat days

St. John's North Shore beaches sit inside Virgin Islands National Park, and Valhalla is right in the middle of them. Our North Shore beach guide has more detail.

  • Cinnamon Bay (about 3 minutes): the closest beach to the villa, with calm water for swimming, plus the sugar-mill ruins and a short nature trail.
  • Maho Bay (about 5 minutes): calm, shallow water and one of the best places on the island to see green sea turtles near shore. Give them space and never touch or chase them.
  • Trunk Bay (about 5 minutes): the underwater snorkel trail, about 225 yards long. The National Park Service charges a small amenity fee for visitors 16 and older, paid by card or mobile. There are no lifeguards on duty. Go early, before it gets busy.
  • Hawksnest Bay: a quieter local favorite between Cruz Bay and Cinnamon, with snorkeling along its rocky edges for confident swimmers.

Boat days. Half-day local charters (snorkel stops, sunset, or both) suit younger kids. Full-day charters to the British Virgin Islands are a highlight for teens and adults. A BVI day trip means leaving US territory, so everyone in your group, including children, needs a valid passport. Our team coordinates charters with the operators we work with. For bigger groups, ask us about options when you book.

USVI law requires reef-safe sunscreen, so bring plenty. See what to pack.

Getting there with kids (no passport for US citizens)

  1. Fly into St. Thomas (STT), Cyril E. King Airport. St. John has no airport.
  2. Cross to St. John. Take a taxi to Red Hook, then the passenger ferry (about 20 minutes) to Cruz Bay. Or book a private water taxi that meets you at the airport and drops your group at the National Park Dock, where Scott and Anysia greet you. Our FAQ has the company we recommend.
  3. Drive to the villa. Valhalla is about 10 to 15 minutes from the Cruz Bay ferry dock along the North Shore Road.

Rent a 4WD. St. John's roads are steep and winding, so we strongly recommend a Jeep or similar. A big family usually needs two or three vehicles. Book them as soon as your villa dates are set, because the island's fleet is limited. You can also rent on St. Thomas and bring the car across on the car barge from Red Hook. Driving is on the left, and Valhalla has level parking for 2 to 4 vehicles.

No passport needed. St. John is a US territory, so US citizens travel with a valid government-issued photo ID, use US dollars, and keep their usual phone plan. Non-US citizens should check the entry rules for US territories. Bring passports if you're planning a BVI boat day.

When spring break falls, and when to book

  • Rates vary by week. See live, date-specific rates on our Rates & Availability page.
  • Easter 2027: Sunday, March 28, 2027 (Good Friday is March 26).
  • Easter 2028: Sunday, April 16, 2028, which pushes many 2028 breaks into April.

When you book Valhalla through VRBO or Airbnb, platform fees add 5 to 15 percent to your total. Booking directly on our website avoids those fees, and our team is your single point of contact for dates, rates and custom requests. From day one you deal with Scott and Anysia, the villa managers who live on property.
